St. Albert Acupuncture
Acupuncture treatment is an incredibly safe, painless, and effective way to improve your overall well-being.
While the therapy has gained popularity in North America lately, acupuncture comes from an ancient tradition and years of study.
Benefits of Acupuncture Therapy
This holistic therapy originated more than 2,000 years ago, and has proven effective in clinical trials to treat and prevent several medical conditions. Everything from anxiety and depression to weight loss and infertility can be helped by getting acupuncture therapy.
The benefits are widespread. Many of our patients report feelings of relaxation and improved moods. They also report improvement in pain management, everywhere from neck pain to leg pain. Depending on what issue you are looking to improve, different treatments are available.
While it has been used for thousands of years, people and patients still have many questions about this ancient practice.
Here is some helpful information, breaking down what acupuncture is, and how it can help you.
How Acupuncture Works
Acupuncture is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM): a well-documented and well-studied clinical practice complete with its own theoretical foundation, diagnosis methods, and treatment plans. Traditional acupuncture involves inserting tiny, hair-thin needles into specific acupuncture points to give pain relief and help with a multitude of ailments by manipulating the flows of Qi (energy) and Xue (blood) that run along pathways called “meridians” on your body. Altogether, there are 12 principal meridians, each connecting to the organ systems, reaching out to the body's extremities.
The meridians run up and down your body, connecting to the "collaterals" which help make up a complex system, nourishing the body's tissues.
This treatment helps regulate the body’s flow of Qi, guiding it to areas where it is deficient from areas of excess. Through this redirection, acupuncture aids in improving the energy balance in your body; stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, reducing any inflammation you may have, increasing circulation, and improving your mental and physical health.
So, depending on where the body needs help, the acupuncturist can decide where on your body to apply the treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the treatments hurt?
Our St. Albert clinic offers three acupuncture treatments: classical traditional acupuncture, cupping (which is done both by our massage therapists and our acupuncturist), and electro-acupuncture. Once we have determined what your needs are, we will then proceed to recommend the best treatment for you.
Each person experiences acupuncture treatments differently; however, with acupuncture, there should be no pain. As our needles are ultra-fine and hair-thin, some patients report feeling (at most) mild discomfort during the treatment. It's good to remember to relax and ask any questions you have to the acupuncturist during the treatment.
In regards to cupping, some individuals may experience a degree of discomfort during the procedure, but many describe the experience as “cathartic”. The marks left by this treatment should fade within a few days but may take up to a few weeks to disappear entirely.
Are acupuncture and cupping safe?
Yes! Most patients find acupuncture and cupping treatments to be highly relaxing and experience little to no discomfort. Our certified acupuncturist is a member of the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada, the College of Acupuncturists of Canada, and is a Registered Massage Therapist.
Please disclose your full medical history during your consultation so we can match you with the best treatment for you and your body’s needs. Your safety will always be our first priority.
Most people can receive acupuncture, but there are some conditions that may make acupuncture unsafe, such as bleeding disorders or a weakened immune system. Please disclose your full health and medical history during your consultation so we can match you with the best treatment for you and your body’s needs. Your safety will always be our first priority.
Will acupuncture interfere with my medication?
In some cases, acupuncture may increase the efficacy of your medication, which may prompt your doctor to adjust your dosage. When we sit down to talk about the best treatments for you, please disclose your full medical history during the consultation. This way we can best match you with the treatment which will achieve the results you want.
What kind of clothing do I need to wear to my acupuncture appointment?
During your acupuncture appointment, wear relaxed, loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. If needed, a gown will be provided for you at our clinic.
What should I expect after my acupuncture treatment?
During the first 24 - 48 hours after treatment, patients may feel deep relaxation, a significant change in emotions, near-instant relief from pain, and/or detox symptoms. These reactions tend to be temporary and usually subside within a few days. If you have any questions about how you feel after the appointment, don't hesitate to contact our offices with any questions you may have.
How many acupuncture treatments are needed?
The number of acupuncture treatments needed depends on the condition being treated and the individual's response to treatment. Some people may only need one or two treatments, while others may need a series of treatments over several weeks or months.
How long does an acupuncture treatment session last?
An acupuncture treatment session typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. Your initial assessment will be scheduled for the full 60 minutes to ensure Dr. Hamdon understands your ailments and medical history. Contact us today at (780) 459-9600 to book your appointment!
