St. Albert Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an incredibly safe, painless and effective way to improve overall health. This holistic treatment originated more than 2,000 years ago, and it has proven effective in clinical trials to treat and prevent a number of medical conditions.

The benefits of acupuncture are widespread. Many of our patients report feelings of relaxation and improved moods.

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM): a well-documented and well-studied clinical practice complete with its own theoretical foundation, diagnosis methods, and treatment plans. Traditional acupuncture involves inserting tiny, hair-thin needles into specific acupuncture points to give pain relief and help with a multitude of ailments by manipulating the flows of Qi (energy) and Xue (blood) that run along pathways called “meridians” on your body.

This treatment helps regulate the body’s flow of Qi, guiding it to areas where it is deficient from areas of excess. Through this redirection, acupuncture aids in improving the energy balance in your body; stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, reducing any inflammation you may have, increasing circulation, and improving your mental and physical health.

What To
Expect

First we will meet with you to determine your particular needs. We will review your medical history and discuss what you want to achieve with each treatment. Treatment frequency is determined on an individual basis, as each patient has different needs.

The procedure is painless. Tiny, hair-thin needles are placed on the body to restore energy flow through certain pathways called “meridians”. Depending on your treatment, the needles are left on the body from as few as 10 seconds to 30 minutes.

Again, our one on one approach guarantees that you are our first and only priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these treatments hurt?

Our St. Albert clinic offers three acupuncture treatments: classical traditional acupuncture, cupping (which is done both by our massage therapists and our acupuncturist), and electro-acupuncture. Once we have determined what your needs are, we will then proceed to recommend the best treatment for you.

Each person experiences acupuncture treatments differently; however, acupuncture should not be painful. As our needles are ultra-fine and hair-thin, some patients report feeling (at most) mild discomfort during the treatment.

In regards to cupping, some individuals may experience a degree of discomfort during the procedure, but many describe the experience as “cathartic”. The marks left by this treatment should fade within a few days but may take up to a few weeks to disappear entirely.

Are acupuncture and cupping safe?

Yes! Most patients find acupuncture and cupping treatments to be highly relaxing and experience little to no discomfort. Our certified acupuncturist is a member of the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada, the College of Acupuncturists of Canada, and is a Registered Massage Therapist. Please disclose your full medical history during your consultation so we can match you with the best treatment for you and your body’s needs. Your safety will always be our first priority.

Will acupuncture interfere with my medication?

In some cases, acupuncture may increase the efficacy of your medication, which may prompt your doctor to adjust your dosage. Please disclose your full medical history during the consultation so that we may best match you with the treatment that will achieve the results you want.

What kind of clothing do I need to wear to my acupuncture appointment?

During your acupuncture appointment, wear relaxed, loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. If needed, a gown will be provided for you.

What should I expect after my acupuncture treatment?

During the first 24 - 48 hours after treatment, patients may feel deep relaxation, a significant change in emotions, near-instant relief from pain, and/or detox symptoms. These reactions tend to be temporary, and usually subside within a few days.
